“The Rose” is the painting that began The Colors of Summer collection.
It was the summer I planted my studio garden. I was running down the stone path, when, just in front of the gate, I saw a glowing flash of color. I stopped and bent down, and there, in the dense green foliage, was a tiny, flaming rose. The first rose of the summer. I picked it impulsively and brought it inside the studio. Once in the studio, I noticed how the light shone through its delicate petals and manipulated its color. I could see every color of the rainbow.
I was inspired and ready for a challenge, so I got my palette ready. I used a limited palette of strictly primary colors for the rose, along with white for blending. I spent the weekend obsessively painting, and by Monday morning, I was finished. I had managed to get all the colors of the rainbow across the rose’s delicate petals.
