It was one of those little grounding rituals that I have lost touch with over the years. But I want to bring it back — with a twist. Each month, I will send you a 4×5 art print, an art sticker, and a letter about the month about what inspired the painting, my monthly shenanigans, and one outrageous story from my past. THE SNAIL MAIL SCHEDULE:

All snail mail is shipped on the 15th of every month, meaning you should receive it sometime during the third week of every month.

If you sign up on the 1st - the 14th of the month you will receive that month’s painting.

If you sign up on the 15th- the 31st of the month your subscription will begin the following month.

This painting is about hoping for a better future amid a feeling of impending doom.

“The Insanity of Hope” explores humanity’s way of holding on to the tiniest sliver of hope when the world goes dark. A mourning dove perches on a branch, her elegant little body covered in a delicate silk shawl. She burns a candle of hope in her precarious little nest, watching over it like a child. The wind ruffles her shawl. Will her candle stay upright? Will her shawl be blown into the flame? The stars twinkle behind her as she waits, motionless and silent, for a better and safer world.

The systems that our societies were built on deserve to be questioned, but the people who question them are told to shut up and get with the program.

The Rose from the Colors of Summer Collection; Signed Fine Art Prints

“The Rose” is the painting that began The Colors of Summer collection.

It was the summer I planted my studio garden. I was running down the stone path, when, just in front of the gate, I saw a glowing flash of color. I stopped and bent down, and there, in the dense green foliage, was a tiny, flaming rose. The first rose of the summer. I picked it impulsively and brought it inside the studio. Once in the studio, I noticed how the light shone through its delicate petals and manipulated its color. I could see every color of the rainbow.

I was inspired and ready for a challenge, so I got my palette ready. I used a palette of primary colors for the rose, along with white for blending. I spent the weekend obsessively painting, and by Monday morning, I was finished. I had managed to get all the colors of the rainbow across the rose’s delicate petals.

'The Lily' from The Colors of Summer Collection; Signed Fine Art Prints

“The Lily” is the second painting of the Colors of Summer Collection.

This painting was inspired by another of the flowers in my studio garden- the magnificent Casa Blanca Lily. In late August, these lilies open beneath my studio windows, and the wind blows their exotic scent into the studio, leaving it to swirl around me as I paint. These white lilies, like the winter snows, reflect the colors surrounding them, whether it is the blue shadows of the trees, the gold of the sun, or a pastel pink reflection of their neighboring flowers, the blood-red Hope for Humanity rose.

Just like ‘The Rose,” I used a palette of primary colors for this lily, along with white for blending. Once again, I managed to get all the colors of the rainbow across the lily’s delicate petals, this time, in pastels.

'The Poppy' from The Colors of Summer Collection; Fine Art Prints

“The Poppy” is the third painting of the Colors of Summer Collection.

This painting was inspired once again by my studio garden and a single, flaming poppy I found dancing beside my garden path. As I painted its blood-red petals, a monarch butterfly stopped to rest on a pine bough just outside my window. That is when I decided to include the magnificent monarch butterfly as my third featured insect.

Just like ‘The Rose’ and ‘The Lily,’ I used a palette of primary colors for this poppy, this time eliminating even the white paint. Once again, I painted all the colors of the rainbow across the poppy’s flaming petals.

'The Sunflower' from The Colors of Summer Collection; Fine Art Prints

‘The Sunflower’ is the fourth and final painting of The Colors of Summer Collection.

This painting was inspired by my mother’s late summer garden and the nodding, golden flowers who look like the sun has fallen to earth. I spent an afternoon photographing the bumble bees who gather profusely around the flowering seed heads and knew that this painting wouldn’t be complete without featuring the insects who love this flower the most.

Once again, I used a palette of primary colors for this sunflower, along with white for blending. Like its predecessors, this sunflower displays all the colors of the rainbow across its beautiful, geometric face.

"Hope" Fine Art Prints

This is ‘Hope.’ The moment after the storm, after despair, when the sun first begins to break through the clouds.

"Cabin in the Woods" Framed Original Acrylic Mini Painting

THE STORY BEHIND THE PAINTING:

I used to travel with my grandparents when I was a teenager. One spring, I traveled to the west coast with them, to the temperate rainforests of Oregon. My grandfather was the visiting speaker for a Mennonite community's spring revival meetings. I felt a strange energy in that forest and the church community we visited. People were sad, suppressed, and desperate, and the forest was wet, cold, and mysterious. My grandparents knew a community secret that they wouldn't tell me. The moss clung to everything, like the unsettled feeling I couldn't shake while I was there. We stayed in a tiny cabin, and I remember wishing to run into the forest in my white dress, away from the huge Mennonite meals and the secrets.

I used to spend hours and hours in my mother's kitchen garden on the farm, not because I wanted to, but because it was my job to help pull the weeds. There were white butterflies everywhere, flitting over the rows of vegetables, darting through the apple orchard, and dancing in the fields beyond. I loved to watch them. I thought they looked like little ghosts compared to the gorgeous, ostentatious monarchs that shared the gardens with them. This painting is inspired by those little white butterflies.

I often went for long, contemplative walks on our family farm when my life became chaotic and unpredictable. Nature offered patterns, seasons, and quiet. I remember one morning in particular, walking between a field and the forest. The sun was filtering between the leaves of ancient trees, and as I wandered around a bend in the path, I came face to face with a deer who had been grazing before my arrival. We stared at each other, startled, before she bounded away into the forest.

This painting is inspired by that encounter. You can almost see the figure emerging from the blinding sunlight while the deer remains calm and unaware. An owl sits, unnoticed, a quiet watcher of the scene below.

I was nine years old when I picked up a camera for the first time. It was my mother's old digital camera. The sun had just risen, and the grass was heavy with dew. Overnight, little spider webs had appeared in the grass, and they sparkled like gems in the golden sunlight. They were my first inspiration. I photographed as many as I could, trying to capture their shimmering and, most importantly, the little creatures who created them. This painting is a nod to my younger self, inspired by the golden moments of a new day.

I live in a dense, wild, old forest. I watch many creatures pass through our property every day. This painting is inspired by a feral cat that passes through our property every few months. He has his own little footpath, and he likes to stare at my cats through the windows of our home. I give him food when he comes by more frequently. It's one of my favorite sights- him wandering through the property, half hidden by wildflowers, under the watchful eyes of the birch trees.

'Dreams' Original Graphite Drawing

‘Dreams’ is an original three-piece graphite drawing.

This three-piece work explores how our childhood dreams materialize into our adult reality. The concept of returning to our childhood selves as adults is not new, but it has been vital to me as I have navigated building a life I am happy in. I have realized many times that I am living a life that I wished for as a small child, before my vision became restricted with rules and expectations. This artwork is a wish for all us adult children, that we may find what brings us purpose and joy in this life.

This original drawing is a three-piece panel drawing done with charcoal, graphite, and white acrylic paint.

Each panel is 8” x 11.5.” It arrives in a black 10 × 14 black frame with hand-made lace matting.

Sea Wind

‘Sea Wind’ was inspired by Johannes Vermeer’s famous painting, ‘The Girl with the Pearl Earring’ and my own love for the sea. ‘Sea Wind’ depicts a beautiful woman, standing at the edge of the sea, while the wind blows her hair and flowy dress about her. Although this is a portrait and only her head and shoulders are visible, the rest of the picture is easily imagined. The restless, lonely feeling of the wind is mirrored in her eyes. All she hears is the wind and the waves. She feels lonely and restless, like her surroundings.  At the same time, she draws strength from them while their vastness wraps around her in a hug of sound and sensation.

   This original drawing is 9” by 13.” It is done with graphite and charcoal on acid free paper. It comes matted with lace and framed. A signed certificate of authenticity is included, along with a personal note from the artist.
